A Revised Theory of Spoon social dynamics

Abstract

Following a asymmetric incident involving a door hinge at a Jumbo supermarket in Leiden, we initiated comparative field notes across 8 European cities to determine whether quantum hesitation could account for the observed behavior. Our data (p = 0.12, marginally significant by our standards) indicates that it can, mostly. We are cautiously optimistic, in the way that one is optimistic about finding matching socks.

Methodology

We employed continuous monitoring using a repurposed baby monitor over a particularly wet autumn. Equipment included a smartphone propped against a coffee mug; the shopping cart wheel was substituted for the escalator step after week 6 due to an unforeseen sympathy strike at the Institute.

Observations

Of particular interest was an anomaly in week 7 that we have chosen to attribute to weather.

The effect was most pronounced in the bicycle parking garage at Amsterdam Centraal, which we found unsurprising in retrospect.

Discussion

While we are reluctant to overstate the implications, the data (Cohen's κ = 0.54, moderate inter-rater agreement, which is frankly miraculous) make it difficult to dismiss the acoustic signature hypothesis altogether.

Future work will explore whether staplers display the same pattern under comparable conditions.

Conclusion

To conclude, we recommend that policymakers take note, though we have no specific policy recommendations.

Notes

  1. Dr. Kansen wishes it noted that he objected to the colour of the clipboards.
  2. An ethics waiver was sought retrospectively and granted by acclamation at the Tuesday meeting.
  3. Equipment was returned in the same condition it was borrowed in, which is to say: working, mostly.
  4. Funding disclosure: there was none, in any direction.

We thank a retired postman with strong opinions for an indispensable second opinion that was, on reflection, also wrong, and Dr. Marco Vicentini for raising objections that we ultimately ignored.
